Why Help?

One reader of my blog whom I've been corresponding with, and who also happens to be going through something similar to my situation, asked me why I would want to help a stranger.

When I think about it, it's an interesting question. The answer in part, oddly enough, is because I'm an Atheist. As I've said, since I don't believe that some supreme deity is going to intercede on anyones behalf, I think it's our responsibility to take care of one another.

Also, I have often relied on the kindness of strangers. Arguably, the support I get visavis the comments on this blog is an example of that.

Finally, I genuinely like helping people. As I noted in a previous post, I'm a fixer.

As I've said before I believe in the power of Prayer, but I have to say you have given me a new respect for athiests. My honest opinion WAS piti for athiests. I always thought "how sad for them, they have no higher being to believe in or turn to". But in reading what you have to say I realize that because you don't believe in a higher being, you take more responsibilty. You step up to the plate when your needed. Even as a Christian I have to say that some of "US" sometimes use Prayer as an out. Ya know..."Well, I prayed about it, so there's nothing else I can do" Now while I believe that God doesn't intend for us to do that, people are human and not perfect. If more people took your viewpoint on things maybe we as the human race would be more loving and caring to one another.
So with that being said, i would like to Thank you for giving me a new outlook on something that was pre-judging.
